One of my concerns with this resolution was that I would run out of Mexican
restaurants to eat at this year and a tragedy that would be! I love Mexican
food and then realized that was a silly fear because Houston seems like a hub
for great Tex-mex! Lucky me! So the first few new places I tried were indeed
Tex-mex.
The first new restaurant of the new year that my husband, Austin, and I tried for was
100% Tequito. It felt like I was ordering from a food truck but there was a
roof over my head and tables and chairs! The prices were great and food tasted
really authentic. It's an order at the counter restaurant with a large menu. I
had sopes for the first time, #64. Sopes de Tinga (spicy chipotle brisket), mmm
my mouth is watering just thinking about them. It was a thick tortilla topped
with delicious brisket, onions, cilantro and cheese. Austin had #12 Tacos de
Asada (beef fajita). My margarita was a frozen mango but Austin's was better,
traditional lime. The atmosphere is laid back and there is a lime green vintage VW Beetle in the middle of the restaurant, pretty fun! This would be a great place to go for lunch and bring an out
of towner! So are you ready to come visit me yet?
My next stop for Mexican was with my coworker, Amanda. We had been
at the farmers market racking up some sweet deals on produce and after smelling
all the Mexican spices we decided Mexican was just what sounded good for lunch.
She is very excited about my resolution and has been suggesting a lot of restaurants,
as she is a native Houstonian. She knew of a little hole in the wall Mexican
restaurant, keep in mind we were in "Little Mexico" where you can
buy piƱatas on the side of the road so the name of the restaurant was appropriate Monterey's Little Mexico. Everything on the menu sounded
scrumptious! I opted for the tortilla soup and chicken and cheese quesadilla. It
was so tasty! Too bad I can't eat there again for lunch until 2015.
Trying new places has been so much fun, Yelp has been a great
resource. So for the next Mexican restaurant, Tia Maria's, we were guided there thanks to a
quick Yelp search after church one Sunday. Austin ordered a breakfast dish and
it was like fajitas but breakfast style and it included sausage and eggs. He
enjoyed his meal, the only downside of this dish was that the scrambled eggs
got cold since they weren't on a sizzling cast iron like traditional fajitas. I
had shrimp enchiladas; a recommendation by the host when I told him it was our
first time there. I do not usually order enchiladas but I am sure glad I did!
The tortillas tasted so fresh and there were about 25 shrimp in each enchilada!
The host came back over later to see if I liked them, all the staff was very
friendly. If you like frozen margaritas this will be a good place for you! The
margaritas were good and so frozen, we enjoyed
them! The chips and salsa were good as well. I would certainly eat here again,
the menu had a large selection and the restaurant would be good for large
groups!
Saludos,
Summer
